In a surprising turn of events, 28 Indian students have faced deportation from the United States during the academic year 2022-23. However, the issue extends beyond US borders, as Indian nationals in Canada, particularly students, have also found themselves in a similar predicament.

Deportation Issues in the US and Canada
Despite a remarkable surge of 63 percent in the total count of Indian students pursuing postgraduate studies in the US, reaching an impressive 1.65 lakh, this surge is accompanied by a concerning rise in deportation cases. The crux of the matter revolves around fraudulent admission letters to Canadian academic institutions, emerging as a significant factor behind the deportation of Indian students. Unscrupulous agents in India are reportedly orchestrating this disheartening trend, sending students abroad with forged documentation.

In response to the escalating issue, V Muraleedharan, Minister of State (MoS) for External Affairs, addressed the Lok Sabha, expressing the Indian government’s consistent concerns with US authorities. The objective is to ensure fairness for Indian students possessing valid student visas, he affirmed.

Highlighting the primary reasons behind the deportations, Muraleedharan emphasized the fraudulent admission letters used by students applying to Canadian academic institutions. He pinpointed the involvement of unscrupulous agents in India, orchestrating these attempts with fabricated documentation. The Ministry of External Affairs is actively collaborating with the Government of Punjab to identify and prosecute these agents.
In his statement, Muraleedharan underscored the proactive steps taken by the Indian government, engaging with Canadian authorities to ensure compliance with local laws for the affected students’ stay. He urged a fair and humanitarian approach, emphasizing that the students were not at fault.
The diplomatic efforts have yielded positive outcomes, with several affected Indian nationals receiving stay orders on their deportation notices or temporary resident visas. This success is attributed to the diplomatic engagements between the Indian government and Canada through diplomatic channels.

As Indian students navigate through visa hurdles and confront challenges abroad, the government’s commitment to their welfare remains steadfast. The focus is on rectifying the situation, ensuring fair treatment, and curbing the influence of unscrupulous agents who exploit unsuspecting students seeking educational opportunities abroad.
