In a somber announcement aired on state television, the royal court of Kuwait confirmed the passing of Emir Sheikh Nawaf al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah on Saturday. The 86-year-old leader, who took the throne in September 2020 after the demise of his half-brother, Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah, had been battling health issues and was admitted to the hospital last month following an emergency health episode.
“With great sadness and sorrow, we mourn … the death of Sheikh Nawaf al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, Emir of the State of Kuwait,” expressed the royal court in a statement that echoed across the nation.
Emir Sheikh Nawaf al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah’s journey to the throne was marked by decades of service to his country. Named heir apparent in 2006, he demonstrated resilience during challenging times, particularly when Iraqi troops invaded Kuwait in 1990. Serving as defense minister at the time, he played a pivotal role in safeguarding the oil-rich emirate. Additionally, he took on the role of interior minister, facing challenges from armed groups with a reputation for modesty and a preference for maintaining a low profile.
The late Emir Sheikh Nawaf al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah’s ascension to power in 2020 came after the passing of his revered half-brother, Sheikh Sabah, in the United States at the age of 91. Sheikh Nawaf’s tenure was characterized by occasional transfers of power to his deputy during medical checks, reflecting his commitment to ensuring effective governance even in the face of health challenges.
While the recent report did not specify the nature of the emergency health issue that led to his hospitalization, it was not the first instance of health concerns for Sheikh Nawaf. In March 2021, he traveled to the United States for undisclosed medical checks, highlighting the toll that leadership responsibilities had taken on his health.
As Kuwait mourns the loss of a leader known for his dedication, humility, and service to the nation, the future of the Gulf state now rests in the hands of the ruling al-Sabah family. The late Emir Sheikh Nawaf al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah leaves behind a legacy of steadfast leadership during challenging times, and his memory will be eternally intertwined with Kuwait’s rich history.
